Menopause
Menopausal mood changes require assessment and treatment because they bring significant changes to women’s health. This affects their physical and emotional wellbeing. As a result, some women experience depression or irritability. Women with menopause report poor sleep and memory. The main cause is not always clear. For example, hormonal changes or medical problems can present as depression. Therefore, possible physical health problems require investigations. Hormone replacement therapy can help depression in menopause. Doctors will prescribe specific medication to help with mood changes. Some antidepressants work better for women in menopause.
Sometimes, psychological support or counselling is very helpful. Women might react with depression to changes in their life, for example, retirement or the loss of a partner. The therapist or counsellor provides support and guidance during talking therapy. It is helpful to talk about bereavement, life events or any other problems.
In the past, menopause was seen as natural. Most women now no longer accept this idea. Menopausal mood changes require assessment and treatment because they affect the quality of life.
